If you have concussion, you will have such concussion symptoms as repeated vomiting, rapid breathing, slowing or quickening of the pulse. But all these figures will soon normalize. For most people, blood pressure, quickly getting back to normal, although there are times when it sharply and persistently increased. This is due to not only the trauma, but also high-stress feelings. The body temperature does not change. When a person regains consciousness after concussion it’s typical for him such complaints as headache, insomnia, tinnitus, flushing, discomfort, feeling of stuffiness. Note that concussion symptoms can vary in individual cases; it all depends on the structure of the human body. Concussion is largely determined by age-related factors. In infants and young children concussion often occurs without impairment of consciousness. In children younger (preschool) age concussion can occur without loss of consciousness. The general condition improved within 2-3 days.

In adults and elderly the loss of consciousness in concussion occurs much less frequently than in young and middle age. Headaches are often intermittent in nature, localized in the occipital region, and they last from 3 to 7 days, appearing in considerable intensity in patients suffering from hypertension. There is often dizziness.

Typical symptoms of concussion:

Headache

Dizziness

Nausea

Stun

Impairment

Irritability

Since while concussion, by definition, the brain does not get a physical trauma, physical examination does not give grounds to assume about concussion. Among the indirect concussion symptoms we can note:

The delay in responses to questions or following instructions

Poor concentration

Emotional lability (changes in the emotional sphere or unstable emotional state)

Articulation disorders

Character changes

If a child lost consciousness from a blow on the head, he needs professional medical care, as quickly as possible, because likely he has a strong concussion!

If the child after the trauma looks bad, does not remember how he fell or you see his health deteriorated immediately call for an ambulance! The trauma may be not a just a simple concussion, but a cerebral contusion! And cerebral contusion in contrast to a concussion, which needs only rest, quiet and bed rest, requires medication treatment.

How do doctors distinguish cerebral contusion? As a rule, they do this with the help of x-ray photo and look at the hemorrhage and fractures of the skull.

At the core manifestations of concussion is a violation of a functional connection between nerve cells. Concussion belongs to the upper level in the ranking of the most common diseases in the structure of cranio-cerebral traumas. Concussion reasons are different accidents, most of all on the roads. Domestic, industrial and other life circumstances can trigger concussion.

If you got a concussion you should immediately consult a doctor because the symptoms of shock at first and more severe brain traumas (for instance, cerebral contusion or intracranial hemorrhage) may be identical. Only a doctor can determine what specific trauma you have received. It is possible that you may need an x-ray examination (picture of the cranial bones) in order to exclude a skull fracture.

Patients with concussion must comply with bed rest for at least several days. At this time, it’s not allowed to read, listen to music and even watch TV. Follow the entire doctor’s instructions, to drink painkillers sedatives drugs and medications that improve brain function. When a concussion is treated properly, the general condition of the patient usually quickly returns to normal one during the first or at least the second week after trauma.

You should remember that a person, who has had even a slight concussion, can develop post-traumatic neurosis, or other more serious complications, such as epilepsy. Therefore, some time after recovery, it may be necessary to undergo electroencephalography and visit the neurologist.

The treatment of more serious head traumas is depending on their severity. In urgent cases, there may be needed a help of neurosurgeons.
